Earn Your APR and Become an Accredited in Public Relations Professional

In every year in modern recorded history, we can look back at memorable events that took place.  The year 1964 certainly is no exception. Some examples: The Beatles released their first LP record in the USA, “Meet the Beatles!” The first “pony” car, the Ford Mustang, was unveiled. The New York World’s Fair opened in Flushing-Meadows, Queens in April. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. became the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. NASA also launched the Mariner 4 space probe from Cape Kennedy and headed toward Mars. That year also was when the Public Relations Society of America debuted the Accredited in Public Relations (APR) credential.

Perhaps the establishment of the APR does not rank with the events above or indeed many others from 60 years ago. However, from this perspective, the APR established the need for communicators to possess not only the relevant knowledge, skills, and abilities but also to understand and adhere to ethical standards. Modern society today faces many communication challenges in this digital-driven world: Inaccuracy, propaganda, outright mistruths, and more.  

Each April, PRSA celebrates APR Month, a time to recognize the value of Accreditation and its growing role in the public relations profession. Interested in earning the APR?  No need to wait until next month. Make plans now to begin the Accreditation program.  Here are two upcoming events to consider:

  1. APR Boot Camp. This in-person event April 17-19 will be held in Lansing, Michigan. Registration runs until March 18, and there is a cost.
  2. Nuts and Bolts Series. This free online event will have its first session on April 3.
