Celebrating Black History Month: Organizations Advancing Black Excellence in Public Relations
Black History Month is a time to recognize the contributions, leadership, and influence of Black professionals across industries—and to reaffirm our responsibility to foster equity, representation, and opportunity. In public relations and communications, Black professionals have long shaped narratives, driven cultural relevance, and elevated the standards of our work, often while navigating systemic barriers to access and advancement.
At PRSA Chicago, we believe progress in our profession requires intentional investment in diverse voices and leadership. As part of our Black History Month recognition, we are spotlighting organizations that are actively uplifting, connecting, and advocating for Black public relations and communications professionals. These organizations play a critical role in building community, expanding access, and strengthening the future of our industry.
Black Public Relations Society of Chicago (BPRS)
The Black Public Relations Society of Chicago (BPRS) was established and incorporated in 1983. It is the largest and founding chapter of the National Black Public Relations Society (NBPRS), a national organization committed to advancing Black professionals in public relations, media relations, corporate communications, investor relations, government affairs, community relations, and related fields. Through education, mentorship, and advocacy, BPRS offers programs that support career growth at every stage—from students to senior executives to entrepreneurs. BPRS also serves as a platform for amplifying Black voices, sharing best practices, and cultivating a more inclusive PR profession.
ColorComm
ColorComm is a national organization with a large Chicago membership base that supports and advances women of color in communications, including public relations, marketing, and media. Through leadership development programs, professional summits, and a robust member network, ColorComm equips its community with the tools, connections, and support needed to succeed in senior-level roles. Its work is particularly impactful in addressing the intersectional challenges faced by Black women in communications and expanding pathways to executive leadership.
National Association of Black Journalists – Chicago Chapter (NABJ Chicago)
The National Association of Black Journalists Chicago Chapter serves as a vital resource for Black journalists, media professionals, and communicators throughout the region. While rooted in journalism, NABJ Chicago’s impact extends to public relations and strategic communications, offering professional development, mentorship, and advocacy for equitable representation in media. The organization also plays an important role in strengthening relationships between journalists and PR professionals while promoting fair and accurate coverage of Black communities.
As we recognize Black History Month, it is also an opportunity to consider how we show up for one another throughout the year. Supporting organizations that uplift Black PR professionals strengthens our industry, broadens perspectives, and leads to more thoughtful and inclusive communications.
PRSA Chicago encourages our members and the broader communications community to learn more about these organizations, engage with their programming, and explore opportunities for partnership and allyship. Together, we can continue building a profession that reflects the talent, diversity, and excellence of the communities we serve.
