ABOUT WORKSHOP
Join PRSA Chicago's Young Professionals Network for our next monthly workshop on Wednesday, June 19 from 6-7:30 p.m. as we speak with three PR pros about the vast world of non-profit public relations from both in-house and agency settings. They will share their day-to-day life in non-profit communications, including challenges and how they overcome them, as well as tips for young professions looking to break into the non-profit public relations field.

SPEAKERS
Kayee Ip, Communications Manager, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons

Kayee Ip is a communications manager at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS). She is passionate about health literacy, public health education, and has led a breadth of award-winning, orthopaedic-focused public awareness initiatives to support those efforts including Decide to Drive; Safe and Accessible Playground Build; Wounded in Action: An Art Exhibition of Orthopaedic Advancements; and the A Nation in Motion® campaign. Kayee also architected community events on behalf of the Academy to help empower kids and adults to take control of their bone and joint health.
In her current role, Kayee provides strategic counsel on organization-wide communications rollouts, leads the Academy’s national media and public relations activities—specializing in the promotion of clinical research and development, and relevant association news—to position the AAOS and its members as the trusted leaders in advancing musculoskeletal health. She also serves as a liaison to several organizational business units, leveraging communications best practices, to coordinate and organize messaging and media activities for external audiences.
Kayee holds Bachelor of Arts degrees in Psychology and Communications from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and a Master of Science in Health Communication from Northwestern University. She also trains in kyokushin karate, is an avid food photographer, an adventurer, and loves the company of her dog, Gus.
Laura Jacobs, Director, Medical Science Marketing and Communications, Alzheimer’s Association

Laura Jacobs serves as Director, Medical Science Marketing & Communications at the Alzheimer’s Association, and as an adjunct professor of health & science writing at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) and the Society for Technical Communication, both online, self-paced courses. She also serves as a mentor for health and science marketing communications at the tech and start-up incubator, 1871.
Prior to the Alzheimer’s Association, Laura was Director, Influencer Engagement, Marketing and events at the American Medical Association (AMA); Account Director at Discovery USA, a Publicis company, where she led two account teams and focused on marketing strategies to health care professionals, including medical education, speaker bureau training, and key opinion leader (KOL) engagement.
Laura has public relations and corporate communications experience in the non-profit, agency and corporate settings. She had a variety of corporate and health care clients while at Ketchum and Weber Shandwick, providing public relations and marketing communications strategic counsel for health care associations, health care systems and providers, and pharmaceutical and medical device companies.
While at Baxter, Laura was Manager, Corporate Communications, and supported Baxter’s global, diversified, fully integrated BioScience business with global communications responsibilities, providing guidance to 20-30 communicators on regulatory issues and program planning for a $6 billion business with more than 10,000 employees.
Laura earned her Masters of Arts in writing from DePaul University, and completed graduate course work at Rosalind Franklin University (Finch University of Health Sciences) in physiology, biochemistry, molecular biology and neuroscience. She received her B.A. with honors from the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), majoring in English Literature, biology and chemistry.
Padraic Swanton, Account Supervisor, Greentarget

Padraic Swanton is an Account Supervisor at Greentarget. He is a brand perception aficionado, cultivated through years working with some of the world’s largest food companies as well as reimaging a local nonprofit’s vision, mission and image. This comes in handy when executing a communications strategy for professional service clients whose brand can play a big role in generating new business.
With a commitment to client service, Padraic oversees and conducts media relations for clients in the accounts in the legal, employment, insurance recovery, maritime and healthcare sectors. He has helped distribute an annual survey for the world’s largest labor and employment law firm and launch a digital publication for a major consulting firm, complete with a social media distribution plan.
He is passionate about aligning the goals, messaging and passion of clients with trends, priorities and tone of the media, customers and other key audiences. In addition, he helps lead the firm’s Community Investment and Pro Bono Committee to deliver thousands of hours of work on behalf of local and national nonprofits.
Before joining Greentarget, Padraic worked for some of the world’s largest B2B food companies, including a major quick service restaurant chain and the world’s largest chocolate manufacturer, focusing on media relations, events and influencer partnerships.

Christine Spasoff, Account Supervisor, Spectrum Science Communications

The panel discussion will be moderated by Christine Spasoff, Account Supervisor, Spectrum Science Communications. Christine Spasoff brings more than five years of experience in leading communications strategies for wellness and pharmaceutical companies with a passion for patient-focused storytelling. At Spectrum, she was a key member on the team that launched a patient advocacy and storytelling program for a rare disease biotech company.
Before Spectrum, Christine supported internal communications for a Fortune 500 science-based nutrition company. She also led a media relations program for a professional medical association, resulting in key placements for the client. She holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism with a focus in public relations and marketing and a minor in biology from Indiana University.
