It’s clear that we are all “patients” – from managing our wellness in the midst of a global pandemic, to overseeing care for our family members. So how can we ensure people get the information they need, and how do we make it understandable and actionable? As communicators, we must be dedicated to health literacy and inclusivity. Join us as we discuss the language of modern healthcare, the impact of COVID on our view of health and media, and how we can educate people on complicated topics.

Michelle Abtahi
Senior Vice President - Healthcare, Public Health & Equity | Ketchum

Michelle Abtahi specializes in providing strategic direction and counsel to healthcare clients on issues related to diversity, inclusion, and health equity. As an agency “lifer,” her expertise was borne at the intersection of managing the ever-evolving reputational needs of healthcare clients while also engaging historically marginalized and underserved communities in conversations around their health. Abtahi graduated from Northwestern University with degrees in International Studies, Spanish Literature and French. She is currently based in Chicago, IL.

Andy Buchanan, MUPP

Andy Buchanan is the Director of Public Affairs at the Chicago Department of Public Health where he has led communications for CDPH and the City of Chicago in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the many other issues addressed by the department: mental health, chronic disease prevention, racial equity and the racial life expectancy gap, the environment, substance use and violence prevention. Prior to his time with the city, Buchanan worked in healthcare communications at Northwestern Medicine and NorthShore University HealthSystem, and began his career as a journalist working for the Associated Press, the Chicago Tribune and other outlets. Buchanan has a Master’s degree in Urban Planning & Policy from the University of Illinois-Chicago and serves on the board of directors of the Chicago youth development non-profit My Block, My Hood, My City.

Sarah Scroggins
Director, Social Media | Advocate Aurora Health

Sarah Scroggins is the director of social media at Advocate Aurora Health, now part of Advocate Health, the fifth-largest nonprofit health system in the U.S. She has been with the organization for nearly 12 years holding a variety of roles in public affairs, marketing and most recently leading the system’s social media strategy for the last seven years. She holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Communications with an emphasis in PR and Advertising.

Kalyn Fesemyer
Executive Vice President, Health + Wellness | Zeno Group

Kalyn Fesemyer has over 15 years of experience working with health and wellness brands, building patient engagement programs in diabetes, immunology, oncology, urology, dermatology and women’s health. She has counseled clients at Abbott, Pfizer, Merck, ViiV, Astellas, Evolus, CoverMyMeds, and the American Heart Association (AHA), among others. As a communicator, Fesemyer specializes in leading collaborative teams and developing integrated programming that breaks through to modern audiences. She currently oversees Zeno’s Chicago Health + Wellness team.
